Will you tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Abby Hewes, and I’m known online as the CaCoupon Diva, @CaCouponDiva on Twitter, and also CaCoupon Diva on Facebook). I’m a work-at-home mom of a 19-month old boy, and as of this November I’ve been married to my best friend for 5 years.
How did you first get involved in with blogging?
About 5 years ago, I was sharing couponing and money savings tips on my Live Journal with just a handful of friends and family members. Friends suggested that start a blog dedicated to couponing to share my ideas and tips with a larger audience.
About 3 years ago, I started teaching couponing and money savings classes, as I was getting dozens of emails each month from readers wanting to learn more. I teach about 2-3 classes per month.
What do you find most challenging about blogging and do you have any tips for others who might be interested in doing the same?
Blogging isn’t easy. It takes a lot of work. Researching stories, visiting locations, taking pictures. You aren’t going to get rich quickly. I work about 30-40 hours per week.
Have you found anything interesting or unexpected about blogging?
Both! I’m amazed how many people reach out to me via email, twitter, facebook and share their stories of how couponing and money-saving has effected their lives. It makes me feel good knowing that my little blog has helped even one person.
What do you hope to achieve from blogging?
I hope to help people save money. California is an expensive place to live, but with just a little planning (even 20 minutes a week!), you don’t have to miss out on any of fun stuff or live on Ramen.
What is your favorite location in San Diego that you consider a real bargain?
Balboa Park! There is a free museum Tuesday each week, and the Timken museum is always free. There are the gardens to enjoy and the fountain!
What is your favorite time and/or money-saving tip?
Before you go out, just do a quick google search for the place you are going + coupon + 2012. You never know what you might find! Stores, restaurants, museums, theatres- all of these establishments are using coupons to draw people in during the economic down turn.
What are two of your favorite couponing tips?
It’s hard to narrow it down to just two, because there are so many simple things you can do to save money, it’d really blow you away! But, I’d have to say 1: Be open to trying new products- A lot of times when products are new in stores, you’ll be able to get them for free. 2: Printable Coupons! Tons of manufacturer publish coupons online- they are easy to print, and most of the time they have a higher value than the coupons in the newspaper. I print my coupons from here.
Everyone has a favorite post. Name yours and why!
My favorite posts are when I am able to show readers how we are able to make our budget work. It’s one thing to write about it in the abstract, but it’s another to show readers how we apply it. I love sharing photos of our shopping trips!
What contributions do want to be known for in the blogging community?
I want to be known as the lady who teaches how to coupon practically, save money and live better.
