I discovered Earth Cafe Living Foods, Inc. on Twitter and every time their avatar passed my stream, my curiousity grew as to what gluten free/raw/vegan cheesecake tastes like (all new to me, honestly). The nice folks behind the business sent over complimentary samples of a variety of their cakes for the SDBM :) family and we had a taste-testing party, passing around the dinner table a variety of flavors. Being a lover of all things sugary and one who appreciates traditional desserts, I braced myself (in uncertainty), but was pleased with what we found: a very tasty, healthful dessert alternative (see giveaway below)!

Earth Cafe makes 11 flavors of cakes. Their desserts contain no refined sugars (they use agave nectar), no harmful oils or fats, wheat-free, gluten-free, and dairy-free. They are handmade with organic ingredients, and have no cholesterol.

The Earth Cafe has their cheesecakes available in 15 states that range as far west as Hawaii and as far east as the East Coast. While their cakes are sold mainly in Natural Food Markets and Co-ops, they also work closely with Whole Foods Market.

BTW: My fave is their Cali Style Lemon Cheesecake! Oh, and to address why they call it "cheesecake" when it is dairy-free...because it is as close as you will get, is my thought!.

In the spirit of Valentine's Day how would you like to have shipped to you or your sweetheart (at no charge) either a Strawberry Fields Forever, a Cherry Dream, or Rockin' Raspberry Cheesecake? Simply leave a comment below and we will choose at random and post two winners to be announced on Tues., Feb. 10!

I came upon TheResponsibilityProject.com at an educational website I was checking out for my girl. I must say that my attention quickly shifted from educational math games to some beautiful films, one in particular, called "Tony" (click on "Watch Film" on the top right of site), a short film about the lengths a dad will go to for his child.

Excerpt from site:

"In 2006, Liberty Mutual created a TV commercial about people doing things for strangers. The response was overwhelming. We received thousands of positive emails and letters from people all over the country commenting on the ads. We thought, if one TV spot can get people thinking and talking about responsibility, imagine what could happen if we went a step further? So we created a series of short films, and this website, as an exploration of what it means to do the right thing."

I then found a link on the home page that shares insight of what makes a responsible blogger. At the 2009 BlogHer conference, held in Chicago July 24-25, Liberty Mutual provided a forum for bloggers to share what makes a responsible blogger, which new FTC guidelines now address. Bloggers must note in their blogs if they are compensated monetarily or otherwise, or they could be heavily fined. Such disclosures will help readers in distinguishing between "citizen journalism" and online marketing, and the credibility factor of the blog content will appear more transparent.

The San Diego Bargain Mama (R) Blog clarifies if there was an arranged compensation in the preface of each entry. Online and offline businesses can get the word out via blog sponsorship, banners, purchased links, and also is also as Bargains and Events posts. San Diego Bargain Mama also works under the umbrella Local Bargain Mama (R) and associates with affiliates and partners both offline and online under a for-profit model. It will be held at the Fellowship of San Diego Church (4353 Park Blvd, San Diego, CA 91203) between the hours of 8:00 am and 2:00 pm on February 6th. Donations of gently used goods for the sale are being accepted on Friday, February 5th, from 4:00 – 8:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall of the Church. 100% of proceeds from the sale will go to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund.

Items on sale will be a combination of gently used goods donated by local families and new items donated by businesses. Outlet shopping has become a refreshingly new experience over the years and the stores have evolved into centers of profit more so than ever before. Having to sift through irregulars and outdated apparel in the hope of finding some great bargains is basically a thing of the past. Shoppers encounter merchandise that was transferred from other stores or overstocks from last year's lines to lines released just a few months prior, and also will find a set amount of merchandise created specifically for the outlets, which gives shoppers their favorite brands that are more affordable than the higher-end lines or products. Whatever the case, the merchandise is still up-to-date and of high quality. You'll save on clothing, accessories, houseware, jewelry, and much more. Knowing your prices and doing your homework beforehand is always smart, as you will find some stores' return policies are not as liberal as non-outlet stores.

Today, most brands have outlet stores and some of the finest can be found at the Chelsea Premium Outlets (the one I frequent is in Carlsbad). One of my favorite stores is LearningExpress Toys, which carries hundreds of name brand toys and games at a lower retail price than many toy stores. You will find high quality merchandise and superior customer service. Another place I love is Factory Brand Shoes. Get on both stores' mailing lists and you will be sent coupons and be notified of sales. Some stores offer membership cards that give you a free gift or additional savings if you purchase a certain amount of products or spend a certain amount of money. A popular store among many in my circles, GAP OUTLET, offers a store credit card, which offers you extra savings and incentives to sign up on-line.

What I appreciate most about outlet centers is that they offer savings of 25% to 65%. If you are going to wear the hottest looks and brands, why not save while doing so? Moms know that investing too much on any single item for growing kids just doesn't make sense. By shopping the outlets you can dress your children in wonderful quality brands that look great, but save you lots of money in the process. Children's lines featured within their outlet stores include Polo Ralph Lauren, BabyGap Outlet, Carter's, Etnies:exs, Gymboree Outlet, OshKosh B'Gosh, Skechers, and Stride Rite Keds Sperry.

Across the United States The Chelsea Premium Outlet Centers host a variety of on-site sales and are very popular destinations for savvy shoppers, offering seasonal sale weekends, national promotions, and events throughout the year. Whether you plan to shop at a Chelsea Premium Outlet Center near your home or while on vacation, you can always something special happening on-site. My favorite event at Carlsbad Premium Outlets is the annual Shop Under the Stars Charity Event at The Bellefleur. They do an amazing job, offering excellent entertainment, cuisine, drinks, silent auction...all for a great cause that the SDBM community enjoys supporting!

Plan ahead by selecting your center of choice to find details about in-store promotions, on-site entertainment and more. Join the VIP Lounge to be the first to know details about their exciting events and sales and check back often for updates. Don't forget: becoming a VIP Member is free!

Make sure to print out a voucher for a coupon book, which you can redeem in the Information Center. If you go without printing one out you can pay $5 or get a free coupon book if you the following forms of ID:

This blog entry/message is brought to you by Time Warner Cable.

Time Warner Cable wants to know from kids just what makes their moms truly stand out. For the ninth straight year, Time Warner Cable is calling students in 4th through 12th grade to write essays of 150 to 500 words telling why their mom should be one of the best in San Diego.

The essays will be judged by a panel of local journalists, politicians and teachers who will select the 50 Best Moms for 2010 based on the children’s explanation of why they believe their mom is the best. Essays can be about a special role model that has that mom spirit, as to not be exclusive to the biological mother. The writers of the three best essays will receive a new Sony VAIO laptop computer. There will be a winner from each school level: elementary, middle and high school. In addition, the winning students’ teachers will also each receive a $250 gift card for supplies for their classrooms.

The San Diego’s 50 Best Moms contest, presented by Time Warner Cable, will run from February 1 through March 5, 2010. Essay forms can be downloaded online at www.twcsd.com by clicking on the 50 Best Moms logo or you may go to one of the following locations:

• All Time Warner Cable payment Centers
• All Mission Federal Credit Union locations
• All San Diego County Boys & Girls Club locations
• All Ultra Star Cinemas in San Diego County

Each winning mom will be honored at a special luncheon on Saturday, May 8 and will receive an award and gifts generously donated by sponsors throughout San Diego. Note from SDBM:

I want to take a moment to share with you someone whom I have great respect for and who has had a great impact on me, and that is Lisa Druxman (@LisaDruxman on Twitter), founder of Stroller Strides and a noted authority on pre/postnatal fitness. Not only has she been a great mentor in assisting moms achieve their entrepreneurial goals, but a role model and spokesperson for moms taking care of our physical well-being - something that many of us tend to place last on our priority lists.

A few months back Lisa included me and a handful of others in an intense (this was no pansy-type program-lol) pilot physical training bootcamp that lasted for two full months. My intentions were not to see a huge before & after difference, but what I did want was a lifestyle shift...a new way of thinking about health and well-being - most importantly a fresh approach to making room for a consistent routine in my daily life. Not only did I leave with that ingrained in my psyche, but I also did lose that excess weight that was not about to come off without some serious work (also found the task of shedding that so called "baby weight" was much harder a task than when I was younger).

This entry is to thank Lisa, once again, and to encourage any other mamas out there who just do not feel up to par to consider doing a little something for yourself by adding a regular fitness/diet program into your routine, coupled with a solid support system that encourages you to stick with it. It was one of the most empowering achievements in my life. No matter where we are at fitness-wise or how much weight we might have to lose, we just need to start where we are at and trust that with devotion our hard work will pay off! Powerful stuff, ladies. Please enjoy this blog post by Lisa that reminds us that...well, we really "are what we eat"!

Bet You Don’t Know How Much Fake Food You Are Eating! by Lisa Druxman:

What if I told you that 90% of the foods you eat are FAKE? I bet even those of you who think you are eating healthy are actually consuming a ton of artificial, processed and preserved foods.

Breakfast – frozen waffle made up high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors and flavors? Top it off with a fake syrup.

Lunch - deli meat on processed bread?

Dinner – pasta, filled with preservatives and jarred sauce with high fructose corn syrup?

I have been preaching eating whole foods for a long time. But I don’t think you are getting what that means. Today, 90% of the foods Americans eat are processed! You need to eat foods that are grown, fished or killed (sorry to be brutal here). Here’s another way to think about it. Are the foods you are eating something you could make in your home? You wouldn’t bake yourself a bread with transfats, articial colors and additives would you? Let’s face it. Food companies are in business. They make $ by making foods cheap and making them last and last on the shelves of the grocery store. It’s tricky. For instance, you think when you get sliced turkey from the deli that this is a healthy low fat protein. MOST deli turkeys are totally processed. They take the scraps of meat that are left over from cutting up the premium meat cuts, grind or dice them up and form them into a “consistent” product. Most are filled with sodium nitrate, artificial colors and flavors. Why? You can buy a good quality turkey from markets like Trader Joe’s and Whole foods and the ingredients will read Turkey (and maybe salt or honey or another natural flavor). It’s true it won’t last as long and it may be more expensive, but it will be REAL food!

I just read Jillian Michael’s book, Mastering Your Metabolism. She confirms everything I have been teaching about health but truly helped ME understand why it’s important from a scientific point of view. In her book, you will understand how these processed foods and toxins in our envrionment are destroying our bodies and our world. It’s a definite MUST-READ in my opinion if you value your health and the health of your children!
