January Retail Therapy or Just Smart Shopping?
Who thinks "retail therapy" in January? Call it what you will, but I call it savvy shopping! Some of the deepest discounts are found in January, when seasonal merchandise is cleared out, making way for the upcoming Spring inventory. January traditionally is "white sale" month, which translates to heavy discounts and rebates on linens, towels, and bedding. By the third week in January seasonal clothing is typically marked 70-90% off the regular price, and additional discounts are often offered during the weekends. Some of the best buys include boots, coats, sweaters, and purses. This is an ideal time of the year to purchase wedding, children's, and baby shower gifts. You will undoubtedly find some great deals during this January's sales events in department stores, and even in boutiques and gift shops. While this year you will find much less inventory than during years past, you still can find holiday clearance and festive items for 75-90% off. The best deals tend to be at gift boutiques, craft stores and department stores, as the merchandise is usually of higher quality. This time of year is also a good time to take advantage of discounted storage tubs and bins, too. Utilize the Internet and the newspaper circulars for finding sales at your favorite department stores and outlets. Semi-annual clearances might be in full swing, think twice about stocking up by planning ahead. Before venturing out, check store websites for helpful information which will translate into even more savings. One site I like to check out is the Westfield Shopping Centers' sites; some provide a Fab. Finds Guide, which you can see online or grab a copy of in the mall that shares HOT weekly deals in a variety of stores. Resale and consignment stores also clear out inventory in January, and the best savings on quality "gently" used items are extraordinary right now! Keep in mind that practical purchases made off-season are often some of the best buys. Happy hunting! Posted Jan 10, 2010 10:24 PM.Comments |
