Fourteen-year-old Carlsbad High School freshman and cheerleader, Rebecca Edgin, who is battling leukemia, is one of three young people that the locally-based Mitchell Thorp Foundation (MTF) is sponsoring in the 4th annual “Whole Lot of Hope” 5K Run/Walk to be held on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 9 a.m. at Poinsettia Park, Thorp Field in Carlsbad, CA. The Foundation is seeking participants to help support these critically ill kids in their individual battles for their lives. Rebecca is an energetic young lady, who has also cheered for the San Diego Sockers, and they, like the Carlsbad High School Football team, have been rallying to garner support for Rebecca. In addition to Rebecca, the Mitchell Thorp Foundation is sponsoring three-year-old Dewayne Snerling, Jr., who has neuroblastoma cancer, and whose mother had to leave her military position to be by her young son’s bedside; and Amanda Barvinchak, 18, who recently was diagnosed with bone cancer, just after graduating high school, and had to forfeit her athletic scholarship.
Mitchell Thorp Foundation (MTF) is a public nonprofit 501 (c) (3) organization that supports families, whose children suffer from life-threatening illnesses, diseases and disorders in North and San Diego County. MTF was founded in 2009 by Beth and Brad Thorp, following the passing of their 18-year-old son, Mitchell, to an undiagnosed illness. MTF “cares for the caregiver,” and though they cannot cure the child, they provide hope to the families they serve. Funds are disbursed to the vendor, as approved by the six-member Board of Directors.
Help Rebecca, Dewayne and Amanda and other critically ill kids, supported by MTF, by registering for the 5K Run/Walk at www.mitchellthorp.org/events. Registration includes live entertainment, DJ, Kids run and games, raffle, prizes, run finisher medals, t-shirts, and refreshments.
