The Mom Market

Who I Am: Welcome to The Mom Market! I am Sandra (Sandy) Fong Young, a public relations/marketing communications consultant and freelance writer. I am forever a California girl, originally from Sacramento and currently residing in Alpine. A UC San Diego graduate with a communications major and literature/writing minor, I have spent my professional career learning how to market to various demographics, the most powerful of which is The Mom Market. The power of this demographic is evidenced by the fact that the majority of the local and national brands and companies I have worked with all want to gain positive favor with the mom demographic. When I'm not working, I love trying out new restaurants, meeting new friends, reading and going to concerts. I am also a freelance writer for 944 Magazine and bizSanDiego.

My Goal: Disclaimer: I am not a mom and do not pretend to be an expert on being a mom, by any means. However, I am well-versed in marketing practices, and the purpose of this column is to provide insight into how advertisers, direct mailers, telemarketers and brands/companies of all kinds are trying to vie for the attention and purchasing power of moms. It is well-documented by numerous sources, including the consulting firm A.T. Kearny, that women make 80 percent of all consumer purchasing decisions. And according to the Moms In Business Network, moms' specific purchasing power accounts for nearly $1.6 trillion in annual spending. I hope The Mom Market column will help educate mothers, women and all consumers of the marketing practices and tactics that they see and hear every day, so that they can make the best and most informed choices possible.
