Getting to the Heart of the Issue

Organically Yours!

Like many important subjects, there are always pros and cons so for you or anyone else who might be on the fence about whether choosing organics is the right move. I’m here to tell the whole truth (and nothing but)!

#1: Organic food is more healthful than conventional food. Answer: In some cases, yes, but this also requires an application of common sense. I purposely made my original statement very broad to point out one particular loophole that I see quite a bit. Overall, organic food is void of pesticides, hormones and radiation which results in cleaner food, BUT you can now buy pretty much anything organic, not all of which is good for you. I’m talking about things like sugar, ice cream, chocolate, chips, etc. It’s not healthful to eat conventional potato chips by the bag, nor is it to eat its organic counterpart. Period. So apply your usual common sense regarding food when making your grocery list.

#2: All organics are created equal. Answer: Not so fast...this is another all-encompassing statement. Food conglomerates are now getting on the organic bandwagon in order to increase profits. Wal-Mart, Target and Costco are now rushing to fill their shelves with organic products to meet the demands of their customers. When you consider that these companies send their products all over the country, also keep in mind that the shipping process impacts the environment. Also, if something is in transit for 5 days, it’s not really all that fresh, is it? Whenever possible, I always recommend buying organic products that come from local sources. When you think of the word ‘organic’, you should think of ‘local’ along with it. I’m a huge fan of any local farmer’s market so if you live near one, they’re a great resource for food that is organic and local.

#3: If you’re going to eat organic, buy only organic products. Answer: In a perfect world, yes. However, with the economy being the way it is, this may not be possible for everyone. Here is a great article that lists some items that you really should buy organic because of the high amount of pesticides contained in the conventionally-grown versions. If you need a way to simplify this list, follow this rule of thumb: Any non-organic product containing a fruit or vegetable with a skin that generally isn’t eaten (i.e. avocados, citrus fruit, bananas, onions, etc.) is not a poor choice when trying to save money. The thought is that the thick skin acts as a form protection from pesticides (although it’s not 100% protection). However, any produce that’s purchased that contains an exposed skin that is eaten probably should be organic.

I hope this information will help you during your next trip to the grocery store or when eating out at a restaurant. Until next time...
