Theatre on a Dime

This month is dedicated to all the ladies of San Diego. Want to know where to go for a fun-filled wholesome night at the theater that you can even take your kids to? Or how about seeing some really cool cutting edge theater with out- of-the-ordinary female characters that are real and honest? Well if that peaks your interest, read on…you are in for a treat!

Summer is in full swing and San Diego is bursting with wonderful opportunities to see theater. I just went to see “Suds” at Starlight Musical Theatre and WHAT A NIGHT!!!! If you don’t leave with a smile on your face after this show, you need to see a specialist!!! Artistic Director Carlos Mendoza has assembled three of the best female talent. They are perfect in their roles. Courtney Corey, Samantha Mills, and Anise Ritchie sang their hearts out and gave the audience such an amazing show. Funny, cute, endearing and heart felt!!! So good I can’t even express it in words – thank you ladies, thank you.

“Suds”: June 17 – July 4

Another favorite theater of mine is Moxie Theatre. Moxie is defined as courage, pluck, gumption, perseverance, and guts. That is the unifying quality that defines all of Moxie’s productions. Founded by the critically acclaimed group of performers and directors; Jo Anne Glover, Liv Kellgren, Delicia Turner Sonnenberg and Jennifer Eve Thorn in 2005, Moxie's mission is to create more diverse and honest images of women for our culture using the art of theatre. Through the production of primarily female playwrights, MOXIE expands the idea of what is feminine. Truly they are just the coolest bunch of women in theatre…almost all of them are moms and as their policy, they welcome children during rehearsal…theirs or any of the actors to support women and moms. Their Current production is called “Eurydice”, an extraordinary and fresh retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus.

“Eurydice”: June 12 - 27, 2010
