The First Stop on a More Healthful Path

Columnist - Kristine Valenzuela

Organically Yours!

This first entry could easily be called ‘the pressure of a first-time column writer’. It’s not that I don’t have a lot to say; it’s more an issue of not knowing where to start. I need to start by saying I’m completely honored that Stacey /San Diego Bargain Mama has asked me to be one of her featured columnists. She’s assembled some great ladies to keep her readers current on a variety of topics. I certainly hope I can live up to the challenge of being both informative and maybe slightly entertaining due to my occasionally crass nature. I promise to be on my best behavior unless my emotions get the best of me - then watch out lol!

Ok, now down to business. One of my biggest passions lately relates to organic food. No, I don’t want to start a preaching session here. I’m a big believer in being a fairly neutral party while passing along thoughts that may help provide the moms (and dads) out there solid information to make their own choices and decisions regarding the food they eat. Honestly, I can talk all day long about this subject but I prefer a ‘softball’ start to avoid being too gung ho my first time around. I want to encourage everyone to do some research of their own especially if this is an area you’re interested in. If you’re not sure about the who/what/where of organics, Google it. Read some books on the subject. Watch some food-related documentaries. For the record, I highly recommend ‘King Corn’, ‘Food, Inc.’ and ‘Fast Food Nation’ (a word of caution on this one though; it’s a little graphic in some spots so I’d keep the kiddies away). Everyone will interpret the information they find in their own way and that’s perfectly fine. Knowledge is power, right? I think so.

As you will come to see, I am not an expert on this subject but I will offer my own opinions on organics and food in general but if I had to summarize what I hope to accomplish with this column, it’s to a) provide as much information as I can on organics and b) lead everyone on a healthier path in life. I’d be lying if I said I was the perfect eater or loved to exercise or that my kids eat healthy, homemade food all the time. I’m a real working mom who faces a lot of the same challenges other parents face. There never seems to be enough hours in a day to get everything done and one thing that suffers when we’re constantly on the go is our health; constantly watching what we put into our bodies is tough. I have learned this lesson the hard way (more on that story later) which is what has led me to the path of organic food discovery. I think good, clean food can make a huge difference in our lives. Embracing organics has helped me and my family and I hope that by sharing what I know and what I have learned, it can make a difference for you too. Until next time...
