The Jeans Whisperer - How to Buy A Perfect Fitting Pair of Jeans
Columnist - Gayle Lynn FalkenthalI struggled like everyone else I know for years to buy jeans that fit. Just when I found a pair that worked for me, styles changed or the sizing changed. ARGH!It wasn’t until I started buying and selling thrift store jeans that I finally figured it all out. I’m going to share this secret now with you. I guarantee you that you’ll be able to shop for the best fitting jeans you’ve ever worn for a song at thrift stores. 1. Arm yourself with your secret weapons: Your best fitting pair of jeans at home, and a tape measure. 2. Lay the jeans flat on a table or floor. Then measure the following areas and write the numbers down: 3. Across the waistband from end to end. Be sure you measure straight across. Don’t let the front dip or droop. 4. Across the hips where they hit the widest point of your hipbones. This is generally just below the bottom of the zipper, but not always. 5. Across the widest part of one thigh. This is usually four inches below the bottom of the zipper. 6. Measure the rise, which is from the top of the waistband to the crotch seam along the front at the zipper. 7. Finally, measure the inseam from the crotch seam to the hem. You should have a series of measurements that look something like this: 30 / 40 / 8 / 10 / 31. Now all you have to do is find jeans with these same measurements. You may be able to wear some jeans that vary a little. For example, if the rise is lower, you may need the waist measurement to be a little bigger as they rest lower on your hips, especially if you’re curvy. Most important though are the waist, hips, and then the rise as it affects the waist/hip ratio. DON’T worry about the size on the label. Just trust your measuring tape. I have jeans in four different sizes, both misses and juniors, and they all fit great. Imagine, jeans shopping that’s actually fun!
