San Diego has some of the best offers in outdoor Musical Theater. Many people are not even aware of what exists in their own back yard. Hands down, The Starlight Musical Theater in Balboa Park wins for most unique outdoor theatrical experience.

With a dedicated community of local and professional singers, actors and dancers Starlight produces professional quality Musical Theater “under the stars” all summer long. Headed up by Artistic Director Carlos Mendoza this years shows are going to please the audience from young to old.

The open-air 3000 + seat theatre has the unusual tradition of having the action freeze on stage as jets pass overhead on approach to San Diego’s Lindbergh Field. The actors actually have a stoplight that is in the orchestra pit! When it shines green the action is GO, when it changes to yellow, the actors know a plane is approaching and when the light turns red all actors freeze on stage. Once the plane has passed overhead, the light turns green and all action starts back up right where it left off. It adds an additional unique element to the production and has been a tradition for 63 Seasons!!!

Tickets range from $10 - $75 with discounts available for season ticket passes plus a “kids attend free” option. Visit their website and read about the rich history of one of the oldest continuously-producing musical theater companies in the United States. This is a must-see experience for the entire family…you can even picnic on the lawn next to the theater before the production begins.
