Theatre for Less

Theatre on a Dime

I love going to the theater, and I don’t mean the movie theater, I mean live theater! Most people think they can’t afford to go to the theater, but they are not aware that there are many ways to see a live production for less than the regular adult ticket price. Call any theater’s box office and ask if they offer, “rush tickets”. Most theaters will sell open seats right before the curtain rises for around $20.00. Be sure to inquire if they anticipate a “sell out” for the night you want to go. Also, ask if there will be any “preview nights” offered at a discounted rate. You can also find “same day” discounted tickets for half-price at SDArtsTix.

If you want to see theater for FREE, sign up to become a volunteer usher. Many theatres will provide a brief training session one hour prior to curtain and you will be asked to perform such duties as; handing out programs, guiding people to their assigned seats or taking tickets. It is very easy and enjoyable. Once the show is about to begin you will be allowed to sit in any available seat and see the show for free. You really can’t beat that.

How about taking your kids to see live theater?! My favorite place is the North Coast Repertory Theater in Solana Beach. They have a phenomenal Children’s Theater School that produces top-notch productions and offers acting classes taught by some of the BEST working actors in San Diego. I took my kids to see Beatrice the Butterfly. They both really liked it and were able to discuss the plot and theme afterwards. Their children’s shows are funny, upbeat and enjoyable for the whole family not to mention about the same cost as going to the movie theater. I may sign up my kids for their “Stand up Comedy” class next summer!!! To find out more about the Theatre School visit their website at www.northcoastrep.org.
