Yes, Virginia, Even Wine Can be Organic!

Organically Yours!

In my past few postings, I feel like I’ve gotten much too serious about the topic of organics and/or food in general. I’m sure this is because it’s a meaningful topic to me after getting some eye-opening education about the state of our current food system. It’s not really in my nature to be serious without adding in a dash of the not-so-serious to balance things out. So I’m making it a point to keep this article on the light-hearted side yet still relevant to my overall purpose. Those who know me already know about another ‘love’ I have besides the obvious ones: yes, this mama likes her wine!

My background is in the food industry, so of course great food always calls for a great wine. You can’t have one without the other. As my luck would have it, the more I'd drink wine over the years, the more I'd noticed the onset of headaches and a general feeling of malaise which bummed me out. After mentioning this to my sister, she shared what she had learned from others about the association of headaches and wine. Wines have sulfites. Sulfites give you headaches. My reaction: headaches or not, I’m not giving up wine! But of course no one likes to suffer in order to enjoy something they like. In my case, I would get migraines that lasted for days which was almost not worth it until I discovered organic wine.

Besides the fact that organic wines are made from organic grapes, they are also very low on or lacking sulfites altogether. Eureka! As with other organic products, they’re also thought to be better for you since they don’t have many of the pesticides and preservatives that conventional wines have. Generally speaking, red wines have more sulfites than white wines so if you’re like I am and enjoy a nice merlot more than a foot rub, but prefer to skip the headaches, then organic wines are the answer.

Here’s list of a countless number of wineries worldwide that produce organic wines. Here’s to no more headaches - cheers! Until next time...
