Secrets of San Diego

Our guest blogger Marissa Mullen shares offsite events during Comic-Con that extends the celebration beyond the Convention Center:

For those of you unable to score passes to the sold out Comic-Con in San Diego, you can still join in the fun! Downtown turns into one big party during the convention and it’s entertaining to see the throngs of people dressed up in elaborate costumes. Here are a few additional suggestions for family friendly activities:

1. Right across the street from the convention center is the San Diego Wine and Culinary Center, where TR!CKSTER will be held from July 19th-24th. This event is part retail shop, part art gallery and part symposium – workshops that feature creator owned work and the craft of storytelling. Tickets are required to attend the workshops, and are available for purchase on their website. Everything else is free, including a free event for kids on Sunday, July 24th from 10am-12pm. There will be readings, drawing demonstrations and a mini comics how-to lesson.

2. Watch the famous Cirque du Soleil perform the epic final battle from KA on Thursday, July 21st just after sunset. The action takes place on the outside walls of Petco Park and will include dazzling 3-D projections. This performance was created especially for Comic-Con and is FREE and open to the public.

3. If you’re in the mood for some laughs, look no further than Demetri Martin. This comedian performs on Saturday, July 23 at 7:00pm at the Balboa Theatre. Tickets are required and available online.

4. This one does not take place downtown or during Comic-Con but deserves a mention. On Saturday, July 30th the Baby Loves Disco Superhero Tour is coming to the Loews Coronado Bay Resort. Come dressed as your favorite superhero and prepare for special guest DJs, dance instruction, contests and surprises. The fun starts at 1pm – tickets are available online or at the door.
