Check out these family-friendly events and activities happening this weekend in San Diego! Treat grandma and grandpa to a special day at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center on Sunday, September 9, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. during National Grandparents Day. Grandchildren are invited to bring their grandparents to the Fleet Science Center for a day of free hands-on fun in their eleven interactive exhibit galleries including “Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body,” their most popular exhibit to date. SoCal Kids San Diego currently has a couple fun, family-friendly giveaways going on. If you are interested in checking out San Diego Bayfair on Sept. 14-16 at Mission Bay, here’s a chance to win a family pack of tickets for the boat-racing competition. Concerts on the Promenade: Enjoy live music by tribute rock band, Back to the Garden. Prescott Promenade. 6-8 p.m. Free.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8

Grape Day Festival: Includes grape stomping, a fun zone, entertainment, parade, and 5K Fun Run. Grape Day Park. Fun Run 7:30 a.m., Festival 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Free admission.

Poway Days Parade: Celebrate the 50th anniversary of Poway Days. Parade starts at Poway Road and Pomerado and ends at Poway Road and Bowron Road. A festival takes place after the parade. Poway. 9-10:30 a.m. Free.Second Saturday Harvesting Tours: Explore the farm and learn about plants, gardens, and food systems. Harvest veggies to take home. Suzie’s Farm. 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Price: $10/person.

Lowe’s Build & Grow: Kids ages 5 and older build a project and receive a free apron, goggles, patch, and more. At your local Lowe’s. 10-11 a.m. Free.

Old Town Fiesta de Kustom Kulture: This unique car show features hot rods, street rods, and muscle cars all pre-1972. Old Town San Diego. 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. Free.

Cardiff Greek Festival: Be Greek for the day and enjoy authentic food, music, live entertainment, dancing Olympic-themed games, children’s activities and more. Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church. 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. (also Sept. 9) Price: $3/adults; free for kids under 12.

Saturday Science Club for Girls: Build a basic wind turbine to perform a variety of experiments and wind demonstrations in this eco-friendly “green” workshop! For girls in grades 5-8. Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. 12-1 p.m. Price: $14/person.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 9

Sunrise Surprise Strolls: These insider walking tours of the Zoo are called “surprise” for a reason. You won’t know where you’ll go until you get there! For ages 12 and over. San Diego Zoo. 7:30-9 a.m. Price: $16/person plus Zoo admission for nonmembers.

Surf Dog Surf-a-thon: Owners and their pets will participate in 20 minute heats based on the dogs weight class. Interactive sponsor tents will be on sight for pet owners and their families. Games and crafts for children. Raises funds for the Helen Woodward Animal Center. North Beach. 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. Price: Free to watch; Fee to participate.

Target Free Second Sunday: Free day allows all children and families in the community to enjoy the Museum and also includes a variety of special performances and activities for children. The New Children’s Museum. 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Free.

Celebrate National Grandparents Day: Grandparents and their grandkids can celebrate National Grandparents Day with free admission to the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center’s exhibit galleries. 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Free for grandparents and their grandkids. READ MORE…

Brazilian Day San Diego Festival: There will be two stages with live music, a Carnival parade, a kid’s area with rides, food court, and vendors. Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach. 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. Free admission.

San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory Rehearsals: Visitors are invited to observe rehearsals to experience the beautiful sounds created by young musicians (ages 8-25). Casa del Prado. 1-5 p.m. Free.

Fiesta del Rio: Celebrate the Tijuana Estuary and its Cultures! Uncover the importance of wetlands through a variety of entertainment such as Ms. Smarty Plants, the Paul Cannon Band, and Kumeyaay musicians. Plus games and crafts for kids. Imperial Beach Pier Plaza. 1-5 p.m. Free.

Village Vibes Concert Series: Enjoy live music by Kindell to Ember. Memorial Park Bowl. 4-6 p.m. Free.

Summer Twilight Concert Series: Head on over to Del Mar to listen to live music by The Heroes. Powerhouse Park. 5-7 p.m. Free.
