Check out these family-friendly events and activities happening this weekend in San Diego! There are a number of events taking place in celebration of Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 13. There’s a Mother’s Day Hike at Cactus County Park in Lakeside, the 4th Annual Mother’s Day Fancy Dress Swim at Oceanside Pier, the Mother’s Day Weekend Art and Garden Tour on May 12 & 13, and the Bernardo Winery’s traditional Mother’s Day Spring Arts & Crafts Fair on May 12 & 13. The Birch Aquarium is extending free admission to moms on Sunday with the purchase of a child or adult admission and the San Diego Natural History Museum is also offering free admission for moms with the purchase of a child admission.
Also of note is San Diego River Days, May 12 – 20, 2012. Thirty-three events are taking place from Santa Ysabel to Ocean Beach including hikes, bike rides, river cleanups, history tours and much more. The Three Pigs and Other Funny Stories: The wolf goes off in search of a free meal and runs into other fairy tale characters. Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theatre. Two Shows: 10 and 11:30 a.m. Price: $4/$5.
Toddler Time: Featuring fun art making activities that build motor skills. Recommended for ages 3 and under. The New Children’s Museum. 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Price: Included with admission. ($10, children under one free).
Mac’s Kids Corner: For children interested in listening to train stories, playing games, and creating various railroad crafts. San Diego Model Railroad Museum. 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Price: $4-$8; children 14 and under free when accompanied by an adult.
Make-It Take-It: Let your creativity bloom with a flower clip for Mom. Ages 3 and up. At your local Michaels. 6-8 p.m. Price: With purchase of a flower clip.
Fun Friday Nites: Children will enjoy a night of games, crafts, pizza and movies with friends. For ages 4 to 12. San Elijo Recreation Center. 6-10 p.m. Price: $20 per child; $5 sibling discount.
Saturday, May 12
Discovery Days Garden Festival: Celebrate the Zoo’s fabulous foliage and incredible insects with displays, tours and tastings. San Diego Zoo. All day. Price: Included with membership or admission.
Oakoasis Preserve Nature Walk: Join in for a naturalist-led nature walk and explore this well-named natural park. Oakoasis Preserve. 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Free.
Chocolate Festival: Enjoy dozens of delectable chocolate tastings, demonstrations, and more. Plus lots of children’s activities. San Diego Botanic Garden. 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Price: Included with admission ($6-$12) or membership, plus tasting tickets as desired.
Discovery Tables: Hands-on opportunity to explore and learn all about bird beaks. Mission Trails Regional Park. 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Free.
Space Day Celebration: Engage in fun hands-on demonstrations, giveaways, and activities with local and national space experts. San Diego Air and Space Museum. 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Price: Free for children 17 and under with paid adult admission.
Asian Cultural Festival of San Diego: Celebration for Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month. Festival features two stages on entertainment, cooking demos, craft area for kids, Martial Arts performance/demo, Anime exhibit, vendors, and more. Liberty Station. 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Free.
Create a Skate Workshop: Design and decorate your own skate deck! Experts and artists will be on hand to guide the creative process, providing tips and techniques for tricking out an epic, one-of-a-kind deck. San Diego Museum of Man. 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Price: $30/person.
Saturday Science Club for Girls: Learn about honey bee societies and hive construction. Find out how honey bees dance to communicate. For girls in grades 5-8. Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. 12-2 p.m. Price: $14/person.
Kids and Technology: An afternoon of fun, food, entertainment, and education featuring hands-on technology demonstrations, Q&A with Apple experts, crafts and activities provided by Kid Ventures, BBQ, and more. La Jolla Home Audio Showroom. 12-4 p.m. Free.

Sunday Concert Series: The East Plaza Gazebo features free concerts every Sunday. Seaport Village. 1-4 p.m. Free.
Sunday Lawn Program: The House of Norway will provide different folk dance groups as well as traditional fare. International Cottages, Balboa Park. 2-3 p.m. Free.
