From Harvest Festivals to Witches in the Air: Family Fun for 10/19-10/21

Check out these family-friendly events and activities happening this weekend in San Diego! Celebrate National Refuge Week on Saturday, October 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge Complex, located at 1080 Gunpowder Point Drive in Chula Vista. This event features fun and educational activities out on the trails, meet live birds of prey, arts and crafts, meet the Fish and Wildlife Service Fire crew, and meet “Puddles” the Refuge Blue Goose! Learn how to search for birds in the marsh, and get out to explore your local National Wildlife Refuge. Not only is this event free, but guests will also receive free admission to the Living Coast Discovery Center.

The Maritime Museum of San Diego wants all aspiring ghosts, goblins, pirates and princesses to gather on the Star of India for some ghostly tales of enormous proportions during New Haunted Tales of the Ship. Creepy treats will be given to all who dare attend and kids are encouraged to wear costumes. Tours of 45 – 60 minutes will be held from 6pm-10pm on October 20, 26 & 27. All activities will take place on the ship Star of India, where many real life encounters with ghosts have occurred.

Witches Brew: Gilda’s plan to become a nice person gets derailed when her older sister accidentally spoils her special brew. Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theatre. 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Price: $4/$5.Mac’s Kids Corner: For children interested in listening to train stories, playing games, and creating various railroad crafts. San Diego Model Railroad Museum. 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Price: $4-$8; Children 14 and under are free when accompanied by an adult.Family Friday: Take a tour with a kid-friendly, do-it-yourself guide that promises a fun and interactive journey through the studio. Lux Art Institute. 1:30-4 p.m. Price: Free for members and individuals under 21; $5 non-members.

The Jungle Book: The jungle is jumping with jazz is this exciting Disney classic! A crowd-pleaser for audiences of all ages. ENCORE Theater. 7-9 p.m. (also Oct. 20, 21, 26, 27, 28). Price: $10-$15.

The Harvest Festival at Del Mar Fairgrounds: Original Art & Craft Show celebrates 40 years of affordable family fun and shopping  at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on October 19–21, 2012. Del Mar Fairgrounds 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Fri-Sat and 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Sun.  Adult: $9, Seniors 62+: $7.00, Youth: 13-17: $4,  12 and under are free when accompanied by an adult.  One ticket is good for all three days.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20

Nora’s Art Class: Each class is a different topic and children may take 1, 2, 3 or 4 classes. All art supplies are included. For children ages 5-12. Mission Trails Regional Park. 2-3:30 p.m. Price: $12 per class.

Breakfast with the Littlest Pumpkin: Enjoy a pancake breakfast with the Littlest Pumpkin. Play fun quarter carnival games. Halloween costumes are encouraged! San Marcos Community Center. 7:30-11 a.m. Price: $5/adults; $4/ages 10 and under.

Antique Engine & Tractor Show: 50 acres of all-day fun including Antique Equipment & Tractor Parade, N scale model railroad exhibit, tractor games for the children, arts and crafts, and more. Antique Gas and Steam Engine Museum. 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (also Oct. 21, 27, 28). Price: $7-$10; Children under 6 are free.

Fall Harvest & Craft Fair: Featuring local vendors showcasing their handmade art and the 25th Annual Pumpkin Growing Contest for pre-registered kids. City Farmer’s Nursery. 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Price: Free admission.

Lowe’s Build & Grow: Kids ages 5 and older build a project and receive a free apron, goggles, patch, and more. At your local Lowe’s Home Improvement Store. 10 – 11 a.m. Price: Free.

New Exhibit Opening: “NANO” is an interactive exhibition that engages family audiences in nanoscale science, engineering, and technology. Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. Price: Gallery Admission $15.75/$12.75.

PLNU Fall Festival 2012: Featuring carriage rides, petting zoo, pumpkin patch, face painting, food from local restaurants. Point Loma Nazarene University. 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Price: Free admission.

Arch in the Park: Find out what archaeology is all about. Talk to archaeologists and historians. Dig in a mock excavation and play games. Los Penasquitos Ranch House. 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Fall Harvest Festival: Featuring live music, art for kids, facepainting, food trucks, kids’ yoga, and more. Nobel Park. 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Price: $5/$10.

SEA Days: This family-friendly event will focus on urban runoff, water quality and conservation concerns with hands-on exploration and special activities. Birch Aquarium. 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Price: Included with admission ($9.50-$14).

Pumpkin Palooza: A family-oriented fall celebration featuring choose-your-own pumpkins, live music, and food trucks. Suzie’s at Sunset. 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Price: Free admission.

San Elijo Spooktacular: Featuring games, costume contest, food, and a Halloween movie. San Elijo State Beach Campground. 5-7:30 p.m. Price: Free.

New Haunted Tales from the Ship: Enjoy lantern led tours around the ship and hear eerie legends from the Star of India’s past. Creepy treats will be given and kids are encourages to wear costumes. Maritime Museum of San Diego. 6-10 p.m. Price: $8-$15.

Fun Flicks in the Park Charity Event: Watch Field of Dreams plus enjoy live music, entertainment, and more. Presented by the Mitchell Thorp Foundation. Poinsettia Park. 5-8:30 p.m. Price: $4-$10.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21

Escondido Street Faire: Featuring over 500 vendors, live entertainment, and food from around the world. Downtown Escondido. 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Price: Free admission.

Alpine Education Foundation’s 3rd Annual Fall Festival: Activities include laser tag, pumpkin patch, animal exhibits, food and treat booths, face painting, shopping, jumpers, balloon animals, games, and more. Summer Past Farms. 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Price: Free admission.

Family Sunday: Children and families can explore colorful exhibitions of folk art, craft and design, and win a prize for completing the Treasure Hunt! Mingei International Museum. 12-4 p.m. Price: $5/family, $3/individual.

Family Discovery Days: Not-So-Scary Estuary: Learn secrets of the native owls, spiders, bats, and other critters that “spirit” the lagoon plus kids will enjoy arts and crafts and trick-or-treating. San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve. 1-4 p.m. (also Oct. 20). Price: Free.

Kids’ Day at the Drake Center: Youngsters will get to use a stethoscope to listen to a pet’s heartbeat, look at slides through a microscope, look at various X-rays and learn about general pet care. For kids ages 7 to 12. Drake Center for Veterinary Care. 3 p.m. Price: Free.

Diwali: Festival of Lights: Enjoy activities throughout Balboa Park including cultural shows, Indian dance and music, henna painting, and more. Balboa Park. 3:30-8 p.m. Price: $5/person.
