Loads of Free to Affordable Family-Friendly Weekend Fun

Check out these family-friendly events and activities happening this weekend in San Diego! There is a ton of free family fun this weekend including Friday Night Liberty at Liberty Station, La Mesa Flag Day Parade in Downtown La Mesa, and Sunday Lawn Programs in Balboa Park. Home Depot is offering its monthly free workshop for kids and Lakeshore Learning gets crafty every Saturday. Enjoy music, art, and free admission at the following festivals: Fiesta del Sol, Sam Hinton Folk Festival, the Art of Homesteading Festival, and the RB Alive! Expo.
Summer Movies in the Park kicks off its 2012 season of free movies on June 1 with Raiders of the Lost Ark showing at Heritage Park in Old Town. This series runs through September 29 and includes movies at Grape Day Park, Dos Picos Regional Park, Lemon Grove Recreation Center, Lindo Lake Park, and more. FRIDAY, JUNE 1
Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theatre
The Horse Exhibit Opens: A comprehensive exhibition on the enduring bond between horses and humanity. San Diego Natural History Museum. 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Price: $9-$14. Article.
Two Frog Stories: Featuring hand puppets and ventriloquism during the frog stories and a spider song. Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theatre. Three Shows: 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m. Price: $4/$5.
Friday Night Liberty: Featuring open artist studios, galleries, shopping and entertainment. NTC Promenade at Liberty Station. 5-8 p.m. Free.
KinderNights: Explore how animals use claws, teeth, talons, or venom to hunt. Meet a polar bear keeper and see a polar bear up close. For ages 3 to 6. San Diego Zoo. 6-7:30 p.m. Price: $12/$15.
SATURDAY, JUNE 2
Bugs, Spiders & Insects Tour: Walk and learn about the six and eight legged creatures that are sometimes unseen by the untrained eye. For ages 10 and older. Lakeside’s River Park Conservancy. 9-11 a.m. Free.
Home Depot’s Kids Workshops: Offers useful and fun projects for kids while teaching children do-it-yourself skills and tool safety. At your local Home Depot. 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Free.
Fiesta del Sol: Featuring live music, an arts & crafts fair, children’s activities, an international food court, and more. Fletcher Cove Park. 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. Free.
La Mesa Flag Day Parade: The festivities begin at 9:00 a.m. with two concerts. The parade starts at 10:00 a.m. with fun activities planned for active the parade. Downtown La Mesa. 9 a.m. Free.
Saturday Crafts for Kids: Bring the kids for some crafty fun! For ages 3 and up. Lakeshore Learning. 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Free.
Trunk Treasures
Sam Hinton Folk Festival: Listen to musical performances in the gazebo, enjoy storytelling, participate in music workshops, join the family country dance, and more. Old Poway Park. 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Free.
Trunk Treasure Consignment Sale: You’ll find maternity, baby and children’s clothes, toys, furniture, books and more! Design Center in Chula Vista, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Free admission. Article.
Family Science Saturdays: Explore some of the properties of color and light in the Tinkering Studio. Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. 1-3 p.m. Price: Included with gallery admission ($9.75/$11.75).
The Addams Family: Based on the bizarre and beloved family of characters created by legendary cartoonist Charles Addams. San Diego Civic Theatre. 2 and 8 p.m. Price: Starting at $20.
SUNDAY, JUNE 3
La Mesa Firefighter’s Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser: Bring the family for a tasty breakfast with money raised from this event benefiting the Burn Institute. La Mesa Fire Station 11. 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. Price: $5.
Farmer Bill's Eggs at City Farmers Nursery
Wings Over Gillespie: Air show will celebrate the “Marine Corps Aviation Centennial” Also featuring a Kids Zone with rides, entertainers, games and prizes, education displays, and more. Gillespie Field. 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Price: $10/$15; Children 5 and under free; Family packs available. June 1: Education Day. Air Show on June 2 & 3. Article.
Art of Homesteading Festival: Enjoy local art and music among the nursery grounds. City Farmers Nursery. 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Free.
RB Alive! Expo: Street fair will feature 300 booths, 2 stages, a food court and kids zone. The Art Center will feature performing arts, music, and visual arts for all ages. Bernardo Center Drive. 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Free admission.
Sunday Lawn Programs: Today enjoy a traditional performance from the House of Denmark. International Cottages, Balboa Park. 2 -3 p.m. Free.
