Check out these family-friendly events and activities happening this weekend in San Diego! Summer is sizzling with live music at local parks. These concerts are free and are a great way to enjoy a picnic with family and friends while listening to local talent. Concerts this week include: Point Loma Concert Series, Mission Hills Summer Concerts in the Park, Sunset Summer Concert Series, Concerts on the Promenade, Bird Park Summer Concert Series, Organ Concert in Balboa Park, Sunday Lawn Program in Balboa Park, Poway’s Summer Concert Series, and Sundays at Six Summer Concert Series.


FRIDAY, JULY 27

Finger Painting Friday: A unique environment designed to foster color recognition, application techniques, and creative self-expression. Recommended for ages 4 and under. The New Children’s Museum. 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Price: $10.

Tooth Fairy Storytime & Dress Up: The Tooth Fairy visits with exciting tales! Cardiff-by-the-Sea Library. 10:30-11:30 a.m. Free.

Kid’s Night Out: Featuring arts and crafts, play in the gym, snack, pizza and juice, and a G-rated movie. Kidville Chula Vista. 5-9 p.m. Price: $30/members, $35/non-members.

Mission Hills Summer Concerts in the Park: Live music by Spectrum tonight. Pioneer Park. 6-8 p.m. Free.

Movie in the Park: Enjoy “How to Train Your Dragon.” Pre-show activities start at 7:30 p.m. and the movie starts at 8 p.m. La Mesita Park. Free.

SATURDAY, JULY 28

NCAA Youth Football Clinic: A free youth football clinic on the rugby fields at Qualcomm Stadium. NCAA Football coaches will run the clinic for youth ages 5-14. Qualcomm Stadium. 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. Free.

Coastal Habitat Restoration Event: Home to many endangered birds, fish and mammals, this area needs help to remain as a viable habitat area. An educational walking tour will be included. All are welcome even if you can’t stay to help with the project. Dog Beach. 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Free.

Pine Valley Days: Featuring a parade, vendors, children’s activities, and a barbecue. Pine Valley Park. 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Free admission.

Hullabaloo: Hear traces of twang, funk, rock, folk and blues in time-tested favorites and originals. Mira Mesa Library. 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. Free.

FutureVet: Special presentations that provide an opportunity for kids and families to experience the exciting world of veterinary medicine. The New Children’s Museum. 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Price: Included with admission ($10).

Obon Festival: Featuring Japanese Folk Dancing, Taiko drumming, games for kids, Japanese food, and more. Vista Buddhist Temple. 12-8 p.m. Free admission.

Footloose: A small farming town is turned upside-down when Ren, a high school student from Chicago, reluctantly moves there with his mother. Recommended for ages 10 and up. Casa del Prado Theatre. 2-4 p.m. Price: $8-$14.

Movies in the Park: Activities start at 7pm and “Cars 2″ airs at dusk. Bring low back chairs or a blanket. Grape Day Park. Free.

SUNDAY, JULY 29

Washed Ashore Exhibit at Living Coast Discovery Center

2012 San Diego Blood Bank 5K Walk/Run:Enjoy a course with spectacular views. Visit the “family fun zone” with games for all ages. Embarcadero Marina Park North. 8 a.m. Price: $10-$25.

Guided Nature Walk: Learn about the history, geology, plants, animals and ecology of the park. Mission Trails Regional Park. 9:30-11 a.m. Free.

Pirate Paul’s Pirate Party: Pirate Paul ends up stranded on an Island with Hula Helene but don’t worry they dance the night away (in between naps). Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theatre. Three shows: 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m. Price: $4/$5.

Wacky Science Sundays: Get ready to explore the wild and wacky worlds of mysterious creatures, fascinating habitats, and phenomenal hands-on science! San Diego Natural History Museum. Two shows: 12:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. Price: Included with admission ($9-$15).

Nature Discovery Tours: Get in touch with nature during guided tours of the Discovery Center. Living Coast Discovery Center. 2-3 p.m. Price: Included with admission ($9/$14).

Poway’s Summer Concert Series: Enjoy the bluegrass sounds of Virtual Strangers. Old Poway Park. 5:30-7 p.m. Free.
