Top Weekend Outings for San Diego Families: February 15-17

One of San Diego’s most beloved kid-folk duos, Hullabaloo, will be celebrating their 9th birthday on Saturday, February 16 at the Elk’s Lodge in Encinitas. A little bit of twang, a little bit of rock, a little bit of blues, and a whole lot of fun – Hullabaloo will be performing three sets of foot-stompin’ music for those little feet (and big ones too!) along with dance instruction provided by Dance to Evolve, free posters, and snacks by Clif Kids. Show time is 6 p.m. and tickets are $5/person (except for kids under 1… they’re free).What makes free fun even better? When you can bring your four-legged furry friends too! Bark in Balboa Park 7 is a festive organ concert for music-loving families and their dogs (on leash) on Sunday, February 17 at 2 p.m. San Diego Civic Organist Dr. Carol Williams and her rescue Airedale Dietrich Buxtehude Bell will be there along with representatives of the San Diego Humane Society with pets to view and adoption information. The afternoon will feature classics, marches and animal themed organ music on the historic Spreckels Organ followed by a lively ‘pet and people’ parade across the Spreckels Organ Pavilion stage.
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 15
The Rabbit in the Moon: A tricky rabbit gets the best of a coyote in this traditional Mexican folk tale. Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theatre. 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Price: $4/$5.Family Friday: Take a tour with a kid-friendly, do-it-yourself guide. Afterward, take the nature trail down to the Lux Classroom for a hands-on art project. Recommended for kids ages 4+. Lux Art Institute. 1-4 p.m. Price: Free for Members; $5/non-members.The Harlem Globetrotters: This famous basketball group is in town on their “You Write The Rules” tour, where you decide the new rule they add to the game. Nature Club: Designed to provide children ages 8 to 12 with the opportunity to spend time outdoors, connecting with nature. Mission Trails Regional Park. 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Price: Free.
Kids Clothes & Gear Swap: Bring a bag of kids and/or maternity items you no longer need. Get a bag of new-to-you items to take home. Free babysitting provided by UrbanSitter. P5 Academy. 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Price: $6/$10.
Coyote Discovery Day: Learn about coyotes while creating art and connecting with nature. Perfect for kids ages 5-12. Louis Stelzer Park. 10-11 a.m. Price: Free.Banfield Future Vet Program: A unique opportunity for kids and families to experience the exciting world of veterinary medicine. The New Children’s Museum. 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. Price: Included with admission ($10).

Erth’s Dinosaur Petting Zoo: Erth – one of Australia’s best-loved and most innovative theatre companies – takes kids aged 4-400 on an extraordinary prehistoric journey with an incredible cast of Dinosaurs that inhabited our world millions of years ago. Balboa Theatre. 1 p.m. Price: $18-$50.
Family Science Saturdays: Get things moving as you build crazy chain reactions or discover beautiful patterns in harmonic pendulums. Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. 1-3 p.m. Price: Included with gallery admission $9.75/$11.75.

Families Make History: Enjoy hands-on history activities for the family. In February, create your own rag doll. San Dieguito Heritage Museum. 12-4 p.m. Price: Free.
Family Sunday: Children and families can explore their colorful exhibitions of folk art, craft and design, and win a prize for completing the Treasure Hunt! Mingei International Museum. 1-4 p.m. Price: $5/family, $3/individual.
Wacky Science Sundays: Get ready to explore the wild and wacky worlds of mysterious creatures, fascinating habitats, and phenomenal hands-on science with Ms. Frizzle™ and The Magic School Bus© Wahoo! San Diego Natural History Museum. Two shows: 12:15 p.m. & 2:15 p.m. Price: Included with admission ($9-$15) and membership.Bark in Balboa Park 7: A festive organ concert especially for pets and their music loving families.
