Family Friendly San Diego Weekend Events for November 9-11

The Water Conservation Garden’s Fall Garden Festival takes place Saturday, Nov. 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Since gardening is a family activity in many households, the Second Saturday Tour at Suzie’s Farm offers a behind-the-scenes look at how a farm of their size operates. On Saturday, November 10, families can see where Suzie’s veggies get their start, meet farm animals like chickens, ducks, and goats, and take home some fresh veggies. Don’t forget your market bag! The tour is $10 per person (children 3 and under are free) and kicks off promptly at 10 a.m. from their warehouse.  And while we are talking about being green, peace. love. swap. San Diego is hosting their Fall & Winter Kids, Maternity Clothing and Gear Swap on Saturday, November 10 starting at 9 a.m. at Tap Fever Studios. Moms, bring in your like-new, freshly laundered (on hangers) maternity and kids clothes and leave with a bag of new-to-you finds from fellow moms. Bringing the kids? Not to worry, UrbanSitter will be there providing free childcare. Unswapped items will go to charities such as the San Diego Rescue Mission.The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center is rolling out a new workshop this weekend, specially designed for young scientists in Kindergarten through 2nd grade. Their brand new Monarchs and Milkweed Discovery Workshop will take place Sunday, November 11 from 12 – 1:30 p.m. From their compound eyes to their straw-like tongues and powerful flight muscles for the long migration, kids will be entranced by monarch butterflies! Workshops also offer a special discount for the new IMAX® film Flight of the Butterflies. The Fleet also has a new program called Young Scientists Caterpillar Club for 3 to 5 years old, but this has already sold out. Cinderella: A fairy godmother magically transforms Cinderella from a humble serving maid to the “Belle of the Ball.” Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theatre. 10 a.m and 11:30 a.m. Price: $4/$5.  Toddler Time: Featuring fun art making activities that build motor skills. Recommended for ages 3 and under. The New Children’s Museum. 10:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Price: Included with membership or admission ($10).  Fine Arts Exhibit: The Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos present the Fine Arts Exhibit. Fall Garden Festival: Visit plant and gardening specialists, enjoy live music, an art show, and cooking demos. For the kids there will be a petting zoo, kids booths, and Ms. Smarty-Plants™. The Water Conservation Garden. 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Price: $5/adults, Kids 12 and under and Members are free.

Sensory Friendly Films: Gives families affected by autism an opportunity to enjoy a film in a safe and accepting environment. “Wreck-It Ralph” plays today. AMC Mission Valley. 10 a.m. Price: $6/ticket.

Nature Walks: Discover the richness that unfolds around the Visitor Center. All ages welcome. Tijuana Estuary Visitor Center. 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. Price: Free.

Fall Festival Open House: Activities will include story time, gym play, face painting and more. Get a free ID kit. Kidville Chula Vista. 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Price: Free.

Saturday Science Club for Girls: Work in teams to solve real-life science, technology and math problems during a mission to the Martian surface. Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. 12-2 p.m. Price: $14/$12.

Families Make History: Each weekend there will be free hands-on experiences that highlight a certain era of San Dieguito history. San Dieguito Heritage Museum. 12-4 p.m. Price: Free.

Nora’s Art Classes: Each class is a different topic and children may take 1, 2, 3 or 4 classes. All art supplies are included. For children ages 5-12. Mission Trails Regional Park. 2-3:30 p.m. Price: $12/class.

The Sound of Music: A musical based on the true story of the Trapp Family Singers in 1940s Austria. Recommended for ages 6 and older. Casa del Prado Theatre. 2 p.m. Price: $10-$15.


4th Annual 5k Run/Walk for Hope: The day will include a 5k Run/Walk, diaper dash for kids under 6, health and wellness expo, family friendly band, kid’s play zone, food from various San Diego restaurants, and a silent auction. Family Day at the San Diego Jewish Book Fair: Especially for kids up to age 8, families can meet authors, listen to live music, check out the book nook, have fun getting crafty with Kid Ventures and Art Soup, enjoy a yoga class, and more. Lawrence Family JCC. 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Price: Free admission.

The New Children’s Museum

New Workshop for Kids: A special weekend workshop specially designed for students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade in their brand new Monarchs and Milkweed Discovery Workshop. Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. 12-1:30 p.m. Price: $14 per child/members; $16/per child non-members. (The Caterpillar Club for 3-5 year old scientists is sold out).

Target Free Second Sunday: Children and families can enjoy the museum as well as a variety of special performances and activities. The New Children’s Museum. 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Price: Free.

Family Drop-In Days: Encourages participants to explore and learn about the art on view through interactive games, child-friendly tours and art making. San Diego Museum of Art. 1-3 p.m. Price: Included with admission ($4.50-$12).
