February is San Diego Museum Month

San Diego Museum Month  brings half-off admission fees to 40 San Diego County museums, and it is is back this February 2012.  With leap year, that means 29 days for locals and travelers to take advantage of San Diego’s best museums – sites like the Birch Aquarium at Scripps, San Diego Botanic Garden, San Diego Model Railroad Museum, The New Children’s Museum, LUX Art Institute and more.


Birch Aquarium at Scripps is the exploration center for the world-renowned Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. The aquarium features more than 60 habitats of fishes and invertebrates. Attendees will enjoy the interactive exhibit, “Boundless Energy,” which shares ways to use renewable energy of the wind, sun and waves to assure a bright future with clear skies, clean water, and healthy oceans.

U.S.S. Midway offers a chance to explore a floating city at sea and relive nearly 50 years of world history aboard the longest-serving Navy aircraft carrier of the 20th century. Admission includes a self-guided audio tour to 60 exhibits throughout the historic aircraft carrier and 25 restored aircraft.


San Diego Model Railroad Museum is one of the largest indoor model railroad displays in the world with both children and adults of all ages heading to this museum to check out the miniature representations of California railroads.

The Whaley House attracts over 100,000 visitors each year with guests traveling from across the globe to experience this world-renowned museum and its ghostly legends. It is owned by San Diego County and since September of 2000 Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO)has managed and operated the property.


Oceanside Museum of Art will bring a variety of exhibitions in February 2012 including The Point of View: William Glen Crooks; OMA Artist Alliance, which opens on February 4; and Beachhead! Contemporary Art Storms the Shore: The School of The La Jolla Art Center, 1060-1964, which opens on Feb. 26; among others. The Museum will also feature a Valentine’s Day event on Feb. 12.

San Diego Botanic Garden features numerous exhibits, including rare bamboo groves, desert gardens, a tropical rainforest, California native plants, Mediterranean climate landscapes, succulent gardens, an herb garden, fire safe landscaping, a subtropical fruit garden, and native coastal sage natural areas. On-site, the Hamilton Children’s Garden stands as the largest interactive children’s garden on the West Coast, offering ample opportunities for kids to learn about nature.

How to Participate: During the entire month of February, individuals can pick up a free Museum Month Pass at Macy’s stores to receive half-off admission at 40 San Diego County museums all month long.  Guests with a pass may bring up to three people with them to any participating museum to receive half-off too.

Museum Month was created in 1989 to promote awareness of the region’s museums, historical sites,
educational institutions, and cultural offerings.  Since that time, the promotion has grown to become a cultural tradition on a level witnessed by very few cities in the country. Last year more than 31,000 visitors used the Museum Month Pass to visit museums at half-price.  From San Diego explorers and nature lovers to culture-seekers, art enthusiasts, and more, there is something for everyone at participating museums and historical sites during Museum Month.
