Comic-Con Activities, Puppet Parade, Insect Festival and More Weekend Fun

Check out these family-friendly events and activities happening this weekend in San Diego! Have you been to a Giant Puppet Parade before? Well, here’s your chance. Check out close to 600 student marchers from Monroe Clark Middle School and Rosa Parks on Friday, July 13 from 9-10 a.m. Inspired by their study of different world cultures, the students take part in the whole process of designing, building, and decorating the puppets and masks as well as performing on rhythm instruments. They are mentored by artists for the San Diego Guild of Puppetry under the guidance of leading teaching artist, Felix Diaz. It’s a wonderful sight to be seen.

The San Diego Chinese Historical Museum is celebrating Comic-Con this weekend with a couple fun activities for visitors. From 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., July 12-14, they will have a woodblock printing booth set up in front of the museum. Stop by to make a print of your very own… and take it home for free. In addition, with paid admission on July 12 & 13 from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., the Museum will be offering a demonstration on Chinese calligraphy in the Chuang Garden. Visitors will get their name written in Chinese as a keepsake.

 FRIDAY, JULY 13

Cartoon Network Take Over: Cartoon Network has assembled a diverse array of Adventure Time themed artwork which will be displayed for the duration of this year’s Comic Con. The New Children’s Museum. (Thru July 15). 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Price: Included with admission ($10).

Cinderella: Audiences will be made believers when Cinderella transforms from a humble serving maid to the “belle of the ball.” Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theatre. (Thru July 15). Three Shows: 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m. Price: $4/$5.

Summer Storytime and Beach Art: Capture your favorite beach day on paper and preserve a summer memory in our mini art class. Ages 3 and up. Warwick’s. 4-5 p.m. Free.

Point Loma Summer Concert Series: Free concert in the park featuring Atomic Groove. Point Loma Park. 5:30-8:30 p.m. Free.

Youth Activities with a Ranger: Come and play Otay King – a new park game for all ages. Otay Lakes Park. 6 p.m. Price: $3 parking fee.

Movies in the Park: Enjoy a movie and a free swim! Featuring the movie Happy Feet 2. National City Municipal Pool. 7 p.m. Free.

SATURDAY, JULY 14

Christmas in July Artisan Fair & Carnival: Showcasing the handmade wares of more than 150 artisan booths plus a carnival, kid’s zone, food, and more. Mission San Luis Rey. 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Free admission.

Descanso Days: Featuring live music, children’s activities, food, games, and a parade. Descanso Town Hall. 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Free admission.

Insect Festival: Featuring thousands of fascinating creepy-crawlies, plus hands-on art, vendors, and more. San Diego Botanic Garden. (& July 15) 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Price: Included with admission ($6-$12) or membership.

Pinkalicious The Musical: This is the tale, based on the popular book by Victoria Kann and Elizabeth Kann, of Pinkalicious, who can’t stop eating pink cupcakes despite warnings from her parents. North Coast Repertory Theatre. 11 a.m. Price: $14-$18.

Nature Walks: The Tijuana Estuary protects a variety of plant communities and wildlife. Come and discover the richness that unfolds. Tijuana Estuary Visitor Center. 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. Free.

Saturday Science Club for Girls: Discover and create iridescent effects on various objects in this illuminating workshop of reflection and light. For girls in grades 5 – 8. Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. 12-2 p.m. Price: $14.

Uncle Nacho’s Hat: Lovable Uncle Nacho is set in his habits until his niece presents him with a new hat that proves to be the agent for change. Music, stories, and puppets. Expressive Arts. 3:30-4:15 p.m. Price: $3/$5.

Family Swim Night – Xmas in July: Participate in fun Reindeer Games, a Sled Race, and the San Marcos Aquatics Team version of a Snowball Fight! Las Posas Pool. 6-9 p.m. Price: $5/person.

Movies in the Park: Activities start at 7 p.m. and Puss in Boots airs at dusk. Grape Day Park. 7 p.m. Free.

SUNDAY, JULY 15

Family Sunday: Families are invited to participate in a hands-on craft activity as well as the Discover Mingei! Treasure Hunt. Mingei International Museum. 12-4 p.m. Price: $5/family, $3/individual.

Wacky Science Sundays: Get ready to explore the wild and wacky worlds of mysterious creatures, fascinating habitats, and phenomenal hands-on science! San Diego Natural History Museum. Two shows: 12:15 p.m. & 2:15 p.m. Price: Included with admission ($9-$15) and membership.

Touch Table: Join the Ranger at the Touch Table to check out the animal skins, live snakes, and other cool items that you will be able to touch. Lindo Lake County Park. 1-2:30 p.m. Free.

Family Drop-In Days: Explore and learn about the art on view through interactive games, child-friendly tours and art making. Recommended for children ages 6-12. San Diego Museum of Art. 1-3 p.m. Price: Included with admission: $4.50-$12.

Poway Summer Concert Series: Listen to the Celtic sounds of Highland Way Productions. Old Poway Park. 5:30-7 p.m. Free.
