I am Dariela from MamiTalks.com. I am graphic designer originally from Venezuela, but I lived in Mexico City, LA and have now settled in San Diego. I met my husband in LA and he currently only speaks English – we have 2 kids, a boy named Adrian and a girl named Maya. I talk about our lives from my point of view which usually has parts of being a mom, being Latina, having a multicultural family, raising bilingual kids and being a graphic designer/photographer. My blog is in Spanish and English; at the beginning I started only in English but then I felt that I needed to speak to the rest of my family and friends that don’t know English and since then I do it in both languages, it feels more like me, I speak Spanish, English and Spanglish daily at home too!
How you first got involved in with blogging?
I wanted to share with my friends and family everything about our new baby and I felt so attracted and identified to make a blog myself right after browsing the web and looking at other blogs so I just decided to do it.
What do you find most challenging about blogging and do you have any tips for others who might be interested in doing the same?
The most challenging part is when it’s too overwhelming to blog because life is more important (but you want to blog about it!!!). I would love to make every post a piece of great design too which would take so much more time than what I have! It’s hard to balance the passion for blogging and the commercial part of it (if you want to generate income), this is still a learning process for me but that’s something else that motivates me now that my blog has matured. The advise I give others is to keep networking out there: join forums, join groups of similar interests, try to learn something new everyday and apply it to your blog. It feels much better when you learn that you are not alone and that you belong to a huge community.
What contributions do want to be known for in the blogging community?
That you can direct your life to do everything you love all together, I love being a mom, a designer and a blogger all-in-one.
Have you found anything interesting or unexpected about blogging?
I never expected to find friends through blogging. It is the best part! Now, after almost 5 years of blogging, I can say that my circle of friends today is mostly from the blogging world. Also, I didn’t expect that blogging would feed my graphic design career so much: I get to design a lot in my posts and in my blog layout, plus I get to design for other bloggers now that they know what I can do.
What do you hope to achieve from blogging?
I hope it keeps helping me grow as a writer and a designer. My mom says that sometimes she doesn’t believe what I wrote because in real life I would never say it that way! It’s pretty common that many of us bloggers are more shy than what we look like in the blog, I know blogging has definetely already helped me get out there more!
What is your favorite location in San Diego that you consider a real bargain?
I am still very new to the city but my favorite place for a real bargain is Mission Bay: it is a free, huge park where there are infinite possibilities to have fun with the family and the kids!
What is an interesting thing about you that people might not know?
I went to music school for about 10 years and learned to play the piano. I didn’t finish the music career but I do know how to read music. I also use to dance as a hobby and was in a play when I lived in Mexico City. I pretty much could take almost any art as a hobby, I love them all, BUT, now I have children and not much time for many hobbies!
What is your favorite time and/or money-saving tip?
I love to shop in thrift stores and participate in consignment sales whenever possible. I think the finds are great plus the savings are amazing!
Do you have a favorite blog post?
I love all the posts from the beginning of my blog, around 2 months after I started blogging. If you look at those posts right now, they look messy and the pictures are small but I love reading my past posts that expressed the excitement of being a new mami, it’s the best!
