Discover “The Living Coast Discovery Center- where wonder comes naturally on San Diego Bay”!!!
The Living Coast Discovery Center, formerly the Chula Vista Nature Center, established in 1987, is an internationally recognized zoo and aquarium exhibiting native plants and animals of San Diego Bay and wetland habitats that promotes coastal resource conservation and environmental stewardship through education.
A couple of years back my kids and I, along with some friends, thoroughly enjoyed our overnight camp experience there at our Sea Turtle Slumber Party, and soaked up fun and educational activities, a hike, docent-led tours, crafts and treats, and our very up-close-and-personal experience with animals such as the baby sea turtles, shorebirds, hawks, sharks, stingrays, and jellyfish.
We are so excited to return and discover much more this summer, and hope you join us! The following is something you must check out!!
Washed Ashore Exhibit: The Center become the first Southern California venue to host Washed Ashore: Plastics, Sea Life & Art. The nationally acclaimed community environmental art project, now on exhibit through Sept. 3, aims to bring awareness to the global crisis of plastic ocean pollution through beautiful, thought-provoking and interactive art pieces. To get a better feel for the Washed Ashore exhibit, I suggest you check out this recent KPBS Washed Ashore segment! Washed Ashore includes 17 original art pieces made entirely from thousands of pounds of plastic debris collected along Oregon beaches, with the only exception being the connecting wire and metal framework materials. Hundreds of community volunteers participated in the beach clean-ups and worked with the artist to bring the Washed Ashore pieces to life. Some of the non-biodegradable plastic items used include plastic rope and netting, flip-flop sandals, sand toys, balls, Frisbees, cigarette lighters, toothbrushes and more. More information about Washed Ashore and its lead artist, Angela Haseltine Pozzi, is available at www.washedashore.org.
Camps: Day camps are now available for kids ages 4-18! Their various camps are small, fun, intimate, and offer an awesome hands-on experience in a beautiful environment. Perfect for animal lovers, budding scientists or anyone that loves nature or is passionate about the environment. The programs for teenagers are also great for getting them excited about potential college or career paths in the biology field. Plus, the Center has GATE camps for 3rd-5th grade graduates. I’m not aware of any other camps doing this, although there may be one or two. It’s a great way to challenge these students and inspire their love or science and nature.

Look forward to more great opportunities at The Living Coast Discovery Center, including community clean-up projects, guest lectures, children’s art workshops, and more. The Nature Center is currently soliciting corporate partners to share in its Washed Ashore community outreach campaign.
