Media Arts Center San Diego Offers Circuit Building Camp Scholarship

Media Arts San Diego Media Arts Center San Diego (MACSD), producers of the San Diego Latino Film Festival, are again offering the popular Youth Media & Tech Camps, but this camp will not just feature filmmaking and production techniques. The 3-day camp, offered November 19-21 at MACSD’s ‘Digital Gym’ in North Park, will focus on the popular theme of circuit building and will allow kids ages 9-13 to manipulate the circuit boards of their old electronic toys and document the process using photography and video.  One of our SDBM readers will have a kiddo go for free!!

Circuit bending is the creative alteration of electronic devices- usually toys- to produce new and unusual sounds. Campers will learn how to take apart and repurpose electronic audio/visual devices, create circuits from scratch, learn how to solder and intuitively problem solve. No previous experience is needed and no toy with sound or moving parts is safe from experimentation!

Evan Apodaca, a media artist trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an educator at the New Children’s Museum, will be leading the fall camp. “Bringing circuit building and manipulation onto the educational platform not only creates an understanding of our history’s analog to digital shift, but it also gives kids the necessary building blocks to freely traverse our technologically saturated landscape,” says Apodaca. “Having them open up and transform consumer electronic devices for new use, to them is like unearthing dusty treasures that the world has never seen before.”

This is the 3rd year the Media Arts Center San Diego is hosting the Youth Media & Tech Camps. Campers learn new skills, but also have a great time in a hands-on and collaborative environment. A parent of a camper from the Summer 2012 camp noted, “This is a great camp for creative kids. We highly recommend – they will learn so much from it.”

This fun-filled camp will run Monday through Wednesday, 8:30a.m. to 3p.m. with extended care available from 3 – 5p.m. On Wednesday, parents and family members are invited to enjoy a presentation of the work created by the campers and each child receives a certificate of achievement. Cost is $140.00 per one-week session per camper or $100 with a Family Membership or sibling discount. Extended Care is $35. To register, visit or contact Julia at 619-230-1938 x 105 or
