Check out these family-friendly events and activities happening this weekend in San Diego! It’s February and the start of Museum Month here in San Diego. Thanks to the San Diego Museum Council and Macy’s, we get to enjoy 42 area museums at half-off admission. Just stop by any Macy’s to pick up your Museum Month pass and start having fun (and saving!) right away. Whether you and your family love art, history, science, sports, nature, along with planes, trains, and automobiles – there is truly something for everyone. Places such as the New Children’s Museum, Whaley House Museum, San Diego History Center, Japanese Friendship Garden, San Diego Air & Space Museum, Birch Aquarium, San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum, and the Museum of Photographic Arts, just to name a few. Have a great month exploring the latest exhibits at some of San Diego’s world-class locations!


Museum Month: During the entire month of February 2013, individuals can pick up a free Museum Month Pass at local Macy’s stores to receive half-off admission at 42 San Diego County museums all month long. READ MORE…

San Diego Model Railroad Museum

The Three Wishes: A poor old man and his wife foolishly waste three wishes granted to them by a fairy. They are surprised by what they got and come to realize they were better off before the wishes. Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theatre. 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Price: $4/$5.

Mac’s Kids Corner: For children interested in listening to train stories, playing games, and creating various railroad crafts. San Diego Model Railroad Museum. 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Price: $4-$8; Children 14 and under are free when accompanied by an adult.

Friday Night Liberty: Featuring open artist studios, galleries, shopping and entertainment. NTC Promenade at Liberty Station. 5-8 p.m. Price: Free.


Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser: A special appearance by Captain Book and yummy pancakes are in store. Encinitas Community Center. 7-11 a.m. Price: $5.

Home Depot’s Kids Workshops: In addition to a newly constructed project, each child receives a kid-sized orange apron and an achievement pin. Designed for children ages 5 – 12. At your local Home Depot. 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Price: Free.

4th Annual Mitchell Thorp 5K Walk/Run: This 5K walk/run will feature entertainment, music, raffle, food, and medals for top 3 finishers in their age bracket. Poinsettia Park. 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Fundraiser.

Family Day: Featuring live music, refreshments and a hands-on art project. For families with children ages 3+. Lux Art Institute. 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Price: Free.

Saturday Crafts for Kids: Craft activity for kids ages 3 and up. Lakeshore Learning. 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Price: Free.

Family Science Saturdays: Have fun with physics in the Tinkering Studio! Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. 1-3 p.m. Price: Included with gallery admission ($9.75/$11.75).

Robotics Showcase: Explore a world of engineering, science, math and technology with interactive robotics, games and more, for all ages! Encinitas Library. 2-4 p.m. Price: Free.

Children’s Author Book Drive Benefit for Sandy Hook Elementary School: Purchase an autographed book from the many children’s authors and illustrators in attendance for donation in memory of Sandy Hook Elementary School. Donated books and proceeds from sales thereof will be donated to the San Diego Center for Children. Yellow Book Road. 2-5 p.m. READ MORE…


Cardiff Kook Run: The Cardiff Kook Run is a 10K/5K run that starts at Moonlight Beach. Locals, kids, adults, serious runners and kooks alike are invited to run– for life, for community, for a really fun time. 7:30-11 a.m. Price: $39/$49. READ MORE…

Guided Nature Walks: A guided nature walk from the Visitor Center to learn about the history, geology, plants, animals and ecology of the park. Mission Trails Regional Park. 9:30-11 a.m. Price: Free.

Organ Concert: Enjoy music from one of the world’s largest outdoor pipe organs. Spreckels Organ Pavilion. 2-3 p.m. Price: Free.

Nature Discovery Tours: Enjoy a guided tour of the Discovery Center and surrounding area. Living Coast Discovery Center. 2:15-3:15 p.m. Price: Included with membership or admission ($9/$14).
