It’s January, and to many this means starting out with a clean slate! As far as the home front goes, some families resolve to assign chores for the sake of teamwork to maintain a clean and organized home, and others consider the value of a house cleaning service. We clean out our closets and make room for our new clothes and toys from over the holidays; it clears our homes, heads and is green!! De-cluttering can be a rewarding experience in the sense that we are making room for new items, but also finding new homes for unwanted items – anything from clothes, magazines, books, furniture, bikes, etc.
The following are a few helpful resources in San Diego to keep in mind while planning an exit plan for your unwanted items:
Hand it over! The Freecycle is an online community with the purpose to find a home for unused items. Sign up at www.freecycle.org – to be a part of an e-mail group (also called a listserv). When you want to find a new home for something you send an e-mail offering it to members of our Freecycle group. Likewise, if you are looking for something in particular, you can respond to a member’s offer.
Give to charity. Donate to charitable programs such as the DAV (Disabled American Veterans), Goodwill, or the Salvation Army. Be sure to call them up to ask when their best drop-off times are or inquire if they have pick-up options.
Discard of your e-waste. There are opportunities at locations such as Home Depot or Recycle San Diego to take advantage of free e-waste drop-off days. Let them help you find the right place to dispose of your unwanted computers, monitors, TVs, laptops, and other “e-waste”.
Drop off your old eyewear. Check out where Lions Club-sponsored collection boxes are in your community. Typical locations include libraries, schools, places of worship, optometrist offices and other public locations. For information specific to locations in your community, contact your local Lions club.
